Sophie Cunningham Gets Fouled Hard, WNBA Accused Of 'Targeting' Her

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham will be making headlines for a different reason this Saturday.

Cunningham drew a lot of attention in July when she talked about transgender inclusion in women's sports. She told ESPN that she wants to protect young girls from competing against biological men. Despite receiving pushback from the public, she doubled down on this opinion.

“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham told reporters. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”

Well, Cunningham is now trending on social media because she got leveled by Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington this Saturday.

With under two minutes remaining in the first quarter of the Fever-Sky game, Carrington clearly winds up and rocks Cunningham right in the head as she was attempting a layup. Immediately after Cunningham made the bucket, she got up and let Carrington know that she wasn't pleased with her antics.

After the refs reviewed Carrington's foul, it was upgraded to a flagrant 2 and an automatic ejection.

"There's a windup, a follow-through and potential for injury with Sophie Cunningham in a vulnerable position in the air," ESPN's Ryan Ruocco said. "There's no question why Sophie Cunningham got up and took exception to that hit."

WNBA fans sound off on this foul.

Shortly after the refs sorted out this mess, WNBA fans expressed their displeasure with Carrington online.

"WNBA players are TARGETING Sophie Cunningham," one fan declared.

"The jealousy these players have are so pathetic and now Chicago's best player is ejected and Indiana should cruise to a victory," a second fan said.

"Wasn't a hard foul. It was assault. Better be ejected and even a suspension," another fan commented.

Just six days ago, Minnesota Lynx forward Nia Coffey hit Cunningham with an elbow to the face. That contact could've been a complete accident.

As for this Saturday's foul, it's hard to defend Carrington when her actions could've seriously hurt Cunningham on the court.
