Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever won’t be competing in this year’s WNBA Finals, but she’s still in the headlines due to a recent comment from President Donald Trump.
On Monday night, Trump held a rally in Youngstown, Ohio. To the surprise of WNBA fans around the country, the president of the United States decided to comment on Cunningham’s appearance. He claims male sports fans like to watch the Fever guard because of her appearance.
“A lot of men like to watch her,” Trump said. “Sophie Cunningham is a beautiful young woman. You probably wouldn’t mind her on the team not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance.”
Less than 24 hours later, a tweet from a social media account pretending to be Cunningham replied, “I’m grateful thanks Mr president.”

Even though Cunningham didn’t actually send this tweet to Trump, that post received over 200,000 views and countless responses.
“He literally said you have no talent other than what your parents gave you. You’re not valued for your skill in his eyes, just your body. You’re grateful for being sexualized? Yikes,” one fan commented.
“Clout chasing insults now is wild,” another fan said.
Sophie Cunningham hasn’t responded to the president… yet.
Cunningham has not yet fired back at Trump’s comment, nor is she obligated to. Besides, she has already said that she’s unfazed by her critics.
“I literally don’t even care what anybody says about me anymore, because I’ve said this so many times — if you’re going to live by the praise, you’re going to die by the hate. The majority of these have never picked up a ball in their entire lives and they’re just like thirsty to like, have attention or be relevant in some type of way. No matter what anybody says to me, I’m going to continue to do me. I know what I bring to the table, it’s not always in the stat sheet. And so, for you to like, not say I’m effective or any of that, whatever,” she said on a recent podcast.
We’ll see if Cunningham has anything to say about Trump’s questionable claim.
