Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham once again stood out for her behavior during the U.S. national anthem on Saturday.
The Fever took on the New York Liberty in Brooklyn on Saturday night. While the Liberty were reportedly not on the floor for the national anthem, the Fever were. Cunningham, who played collegiately at the University of Missouri, once again stood out for her behavior during “The Star Spangled Banner.”
Cunningham was seen with her hand over her heart throughout the U.S. national anthem. She was the only player with her hand over her heart throughout the playing of the country’s national anthem.

Fans were quick to notice.
“Sophie Cunningham is once again the only player on the court to put her hand above her heart for the singing of the US national anthem,” one fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday night.

Some fans praised her for her behavior.
“Sophie has got it goin’ on and she’s a breath of fresh air among all the other players,” one fan wrote.
“I’ll just note that it’s okay to not put your hand over your heart during the national anthem (that’s more for the Pledge of Allegiance). It’s not a sign of disrespect – examples of that would be not taking your hat off, not standing, or kneeling,” one fan added.
“Love to see it from Sophie!” one fan added.
“It’s a bonus about Sophie but it’s not a knock against the others as long as they are respectfully facing the flag IMO,” one fan added.
“You place your hand over your heart for the pledge of allegiance. You stand at attention for the national anthem. Stop baiting for engagement. Be better,” another fan added.
