Kai Smart, the son of Olympic freestyle skier John Smart, has sadly died this week at the young age of 23.
Earlier this week, John Smart revealed that his son was buried by an avalanche while in Japan. It wasn't until Tuesday night that his son, a filmmaker and skier, passed away at the hospital.
"It is with immense sadness that we have to let you know that our kind, brave and beautiful son and brother Kai is no longer with us. We are beyond heartbroken and there are no words to describe the pain we are feeling losing him so young. Thank you to everyone who has reached out with messages of love and support - we have appreciated every one of them," John Smart wrote on Instagram.
"We were able to fly him home from Japan in an air ambulance to Vancouver General Hospital on Thursday, where he underwent more testing. Tragically, the severe lack of oxygen he endured during the avalanche had destroyed any chance of recovery. We said our final farewells to him last night."
Kai Smart was described as a passionate skier and surfer who "lived life to the fullest every single day, with joy, curiosity, and intensity."
Prayers pouring in for the Smart family.
As you'd imagine, Smart's loved ones are offering the family support during this difficult time.
"I’ve never met anyone like Kai. He lived his life fuller than most could dream of doing. Forever grateful for all the inspiration and memories Kai has given me. Love you all," one person wrote.
"Kai showed everyone how to truly live. Sending so much love to you all," a second person commented.
"Pouring love and support to your family and all the people he touched," another person said.
Our thoughts are with the Smart family.
