Caitlin Clark had an off night against Italy in their second FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup group game on Sunday. Despite that, Team USA still escaped with a 55-52 victory over the Italians.
The Indiana Fever star had only one point as she shot 0-for-6 from the field. She also had four rebounds, one assist and one steal in 19 minutes of action.
Jackie Young led the way for the Americans with 10 points on 66.7% shooting. She also tallied four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
In one sequence of the game, Clark drove hard to the basket, but the ball was slapped away as she attempted a layup. Two Italian players collapsed on Clark, but no foul was called on the play.
A slo-mo video of the play in question is currently making the rounds on social media, and it has drawn a lot of attention.
Fans on social media were split on the no-call. While some felt a foul was warranted, others commended the referees for not making the call.
“Because it wasn’t a foul,” a user said.
“No foul, made little physical contact. Clark just looks like she was hit by a truck whenever someone touches her…” added another.
“No foul! Ball was blocked first clearly,” said a comment.
“It should have been,” mentioned a fan.
“Blatant foul,” another said.
“USA was getting fouled the whole game with no calls,” a supporter declared.
Clark has a chance to bounce back when Team USA faces the Czech Republic on Monday. It’ll be their last game of the group phase. The Americans have already punched their ticket for the quarterfinals of the tournament.
