Stephanie White has spent much of the 2026 season under a microscope, but the scrutiny around the Indiana Fever coach has reached another level in recent days. She has faced criticism for her coaching decisions and comments on the physical treatment of Caitlin Clark.
More recently, she drew attention after the Fever’s game against the Chicago Sky, when DiJonai Carrington was ejected for a Flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham.
White initially said she had not seen the play clearly in real time and defended Carrington’s competitive nature, before later acknowledging after watching the replay that the foul was egregious.

After receiving heavy criticism from Fever fans, White delivered an emotional pregame message before Tuesday’s matchup with the New York Liberty. She insisted that she stands behind her players and that the Fever remain united and ended the prepared statement by telling her critics to “go to hell.”
White was subsequently booed by some Fever fans during pregame introductions. After the game, Clark said the reaction made her “a little sick,” while Cunningham also defended her coach and insisted that the locker room remained together.
Still, the criticism has continued to come from outside the Fever locker room. Former Fox Sports analyst Skip Bayless joined the conversation Wednesday, questioning White’s explanation of the Carrington incident.
“1st DiJonai says her immediate tweet ‘white privilege’ was not about her ejection. Now Stephanie White claims she did not see the play ‘in real time,’ spoke about it afterward without seeing replays. WHAT??? SHE’S THE HEAD COACH!” Bayless wrote on X.
He called White’s explanation “preposterous” and questioned how she could have discussed the incident immediately afterward without first seeing a replay.
Some fans have made the same argument by circulating photos and clips from the game that appear to show White with a direct view toward the play.
Despite the off-court drama, Indiana has won nine of its last 12 games and sits at 21-12, fourth in the WNBA, after Tuesday’s 106-92 win over New York. The Fever will try to keep that momentum going Friday when they host the Dallas Wings.
