Former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore was sentenced in District Court today for his now infamous actions towards a former staffer he began having a relationship with. But while he managed to avoid a lengthy jail sentence, he had his wife to thank for that as much as the judge.

On Tuesday, District Court Judge Cedric Simpson sentenced Moore to 18 months' probation and fined just over $1,000 after he pleaded no contest to trespassing and malicious use of a telecommunications device involving a domestic relationship. The deal was reached in exchange for dropping the felony charges.

Judge Simpson stated during the sentencing that what Moore did was awful and he was willing to throw him in jail. But he said that he was ultimately swayed not to a very supportive letter from Moore's wife Kelli. The judge praised Ms. Moore and declared that the world needs more people like her.

"The person who is saving you from the full wrath of this court is the person who you betrayed,” Judge Simpson said.

“When all of the circumstances are happening to her, and she is absorbing them in real time, she not once loses her focus, not once bats an eye to doubt you, not once wants something terrible to happen to you. As I listened to the terror in her voice that day, I don't think there would be anybody in the world who would have blamed her from saying, ‘I am done here.’

“I am amazed by you Ms. Moore. I don’t know where it comes from. If we had more people like you in the world, I may be out of a job, but the world would be a better place.”

A Terrible End to a Promising Career

Sherrone Moore had a brief but eventful tenure as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines football, taking over in 2024 after serving as an assistant under Jim Harbaugh. Initially viewed as a rising star, Moore had played a key role in Michigan’s national championship season as an assistant and helped maintain competitiveness as head coach, finishing the 2025 regular season with a solid 9–3 record.

However, his time leading the program was marked by turbulence, including a suspension tied to the program’s sign-stealing scandal and broader NCAA scrutiny, which cast a shadow over his leadership despite on-field success.

Moore’s tenure came to a sudden and dramatic end in December 2025 when Michigan fired him “with cause” after an internal investigation found he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, violating university policy. The situation escalated rapidly: he was arrested shortly after his dismissal and later faced criminal charges related to allegations that he had stalked the woman and entered her home following the end of the relationship.

While some of the more serious charges were later reduced as part of a plea deal, the scandal marked a stunning fall from grace and effectively ended his tenure at Michigan after just two seasons.

The Wolverines will begin the 2026 season with former longtime Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham as their new leader.
