After taking over from Deshaun Watson in the middle of today's preseason game against the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders had a chance to take a step forward in the battle for the starting job. Instead he gave it away - pretty literally.
Sanders completed six of his first 10 passes for 79 yards in a little over a quarter of action. But his 11th and final pass of the night was his worst. He aired the ball into the middle of the field seeking a defender, but overthrew him and was intercepted by a Bears defender.
The play earned Sanders plenty of criticism as many believe that he made a terrible read or overthrew a receiver with no chance to make a play on the ball.
Sanders saw it differently though.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Sanders defended the play, saying that he made the right read but that the ball just "slipped" as he threw it. He said that he was still made at the outcome and admitted that he needs to execute better, but defended the decision.
"What'd I see? The right read; it just slipped...that's what makes me be mad a little bit because of it...I just didn't execute the decision, but the right decision was made," Sanders said.
Overreacting or Struggling?
As with seemingly everything that Shedeur Sanders does these days, his response to his interception has triggered a mixed reaction from fans:
"He grades himself off his decisions but he says he always makes the right decision.... Ok buddy," one user remarked.
"It must slip a lot. Bc he’s made a lot of throws like that," another mocked.

"Literally judging this kid off that throw is crazy…he looked solid for 3 drives he had…looked better in the pocket …did good with his reads…just had a bad overthrow," wrote a third.
"I mean dude was open he just airmailed it."
Sanders will have another chance to make his case for the starting job next week when the Browns take on the Buffalo Bills.
