As the LSU Tigers push forward with its plans to add players who have previously played in NFL training camp to its main roster, the Southeastern Conference is prepared to take extreme measures against the school.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the SEC has filed an amendment to its ongoing federal lawsuit against LSU, Lane Kiffin and school officials seeking authority to expel the school from the conference. However, the conference is not expected to take such an extreme action, merely give themselves the power to show how serious they are about enforcing its rules.
“NEWS: The SEC filed an amendment to its federal lawsuit against LSU, Lane Kiffin and school officials on Tuesday, which seeks the authority for the SEC to expel LSU from the league. The SEC is not expected to take such action, but the filing indicates the seriousness of the league as it attempts to affirm the legal right to enforce its own rules. That was the point of the original federal suit filed last week,” Thamel wrote on X.
Taking it seriously
Fans were pretty amused by the lengths the SEC is going to in order to get LSU to fall in line:
“Can’t wait for LSU to join fellow independent Notre Dame with half an ACC schedule,” one user on X joked.
“LSU might become the Notre Dame of the South and play Tulane, ULM, South Alabama, & maybe 2 ranked teams a year to get into the playoffs,” another quipped.
“Kicking out their biggest brand is a choice,” wrote a third.
“I heard Notre Dame is looking for a new rival after USC backed out on them? Let’s have LSU and ND play on rivalry weekend in the battle of independents. The loser receives The Brian Kelly Trophy.”

Fans are pretty clearly glossing over Thamel’s comment that the SEC doesn’t actually intend to kick LSU out of the league, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that the SEC is leaning towards more extreme action if the Tigers don’t fall in line soon.
LSU take on Louisiana Tech this weekend in a game that should basically be a walkover for them. After that, they head to Oxford, Mississippi to take on Kiffin’s former Ole Miss team.
