The Seattle Seahawks have reset the NFL cornerback market, especially for New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez, with Devon Witherspoon’s four-year, $132 million extension.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the contract includes more than $101 million guaranteed. He also mentioned that the deal makes Witherspoon the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
Schefter also reported that negotiations became tense before the agreement. “Witherspoon’s agent, @WinSportsGroup and the Seahawks have had heated negotiations in recent days,” Schefter wrote.
Witherspoon’s contract carries a $33 million average annual value. That figure immediately changes the financial outlook for Gonzalez, and potentially another tough negotiation could yield a fovourable contract for the Patriots star.
Gonzalez shares the same agent, Reggie Johnson, as Witherspoon. Schefter wrote, "Now that Devon Witherspoon’s deal is done, the market also has been reset for Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez, who also is looking for a new deal and has the same agent, Reggie Johnson, as Witherspoon. The Patriots and Gonzalez have not made much progress so far."
So, the Patriots–Gonzalez situation now becomes more important after Witherspoon established a new benchmark.
New England owner Robert Kraft previously said the team had offered Gonzalez a contract that would make him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback. Witherspoon has since taken that position.
"We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person," Kraft said to the media in late July. "That's why we made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and coincidentally it's the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history."
Gonzalez can now use the Seahawks deal as a negotiating reference. His camp could seek more than $33 million annually, especially with the salary cap expected to keep rising.
For the Patriots, the decision involves more than retaining one elite corner. Gonzalez gives Mike Vrabel’s defense flexibility because he can handle difficult coverage assignments.
That value matters as New England continues building around quarterback Drake Maye. The Patriots have added major offensive talent while trying to develop a stronger defensive foundation.

From a roster point of view, paying Gonzalez protects a premium position. However, a contract above $100 million in guarantees could restrict spending at other positions.
The Patriots also have leverage because Gonzalez remains under contract. Yet delaying a long-term deal could become costly if another cornerback resets the market again.
Witherspoon’s extension has removed the uncertainty at the top of the position. Gonzalez now has a clear target. So now, New England must decide whether to meet that market before the price rises again.
