Scramble Now Back on as Vrabel, Patriots Hunt for No. 3 Running Back

When the team returns to practice on Saturday, a mad scramble will be on at running back in New England Patriots training camp.

Sure, the top two spots are rock-solid with Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. But the team was dealt a setback at No. 3 when Terrell Jennings was placed on the injured reserve list this week.

Four runners now in play

That forced rookie Jam Miller (14 carries, 55 yards) into the lead role followed by Lan Larison (7 carries, 1 yard). The team also scrambled on Wednesday, signing veterans JaMycal Hasty and Hassan Haskins, each of whom has a history with coach Mike Vrabel.

Both of the new guys saw the football in the second half. Asked after Thursday night's preseason game with Indianapolis if he thought his No. 3 back was on the current roster right now, Vrabel wasn't exactly enthusiastic in his response.

"I mean, I think you try to see what you have in the young guys, and then those guys are veterans. They've played. They're probably two different style of backs, but I like both of them personally," Vrabel said. "We've had some experience with Jamycal, and then going back to Tennessee with Hassan. I think it's probably too early to tell for both of them. I know that they're going to compete, but we just got them yesterday to be able to get them ready for the game."

Rookie takes the lead

Miller, a seventh-round pick out of Alabama this year, will clearly get the first shot. Vrabel liked what he saw.

"It was good to see Jam come out and have some nice runs," Vrabel said. "I felt like he ran with his pads down and had a couple physical runs and was happy for him."

Familiar faces in camp

A 29-year-old, Hasty spent 2025 on the Miami practice squad. He played 17 games for the Patriots between the 2023 and 2024 seasons and was in camp with the team last summer until he was cut in August.

Haskins played for Vrabel in Tennessee back in 2022 and spent the past two years as a reserve with the Los Angeles Chargers. Vrabel and the Titans drafted him in the fourth round.
