The San Francisco Giants made MLB history Saturday, with Camilo Doval becoming the 71st different player to appear for the team this season.
Doval entered in the seventh inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers, officially tying the Giants with the 2025 Atlanta Braves for the most players used by a team in a single MLB season. Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reported the milestone on X.
The moment also gave Doval a memorable return to San Francisco. The Giants claimed the former All-Star reliever off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, just over a year after trading him to the New York Yankees.
Doval did more than simply add his name to the record. He delivered a perfect seventh inning against the heart of the Dodgers’ lineup.
The right-hander struck out Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani and Dalton Rushing to complete the frame. He reached 99.5 mph with his fastball and leaned heavily on his slider, giving Giants fans a glimpse of the pitcher who once became San Francisco’s closer.
Doval spent his first five MLB seasons with the Giants and made the All-Star team in 2023 after recording a 2.93 ERA and an NL-leading 39 saves. He was traded to the Yankees at the 2025 deadline before moving to Pittsburgh this season.

San Francisco’s record-setting roster turnover has been driven largely by injuries and constant roster moves. The Giants reached 70 players before Doval returned, while several key players landed on the injured list during the final weeks of the season.
Now, the Giants have matched an MLB record that seemed unlikely when the season began. Doval’s return made the milestone official and added an entertaining twist to an unusually eventful year in San Francisco.
