Sami Zayn’s frustration boiled over at the end of the August 21, 2026, episode of Friday Night SmackDown in Toronto after Kevin Owens refused to use the Undisputed WWE Championship as a weapon during his title match against CM Punk.
Punk and Owens went at each other from the opening moments of the main event. “The Prizefighter” attacked “The Best in the World” before the bell and carried that aggression into the match, repeatedly taking the champion outside the ring and battering him around ringside.
The challenger came close to winning on several occasions. Kevin Owens hit a frog splash from the barricade, followed by a Swanton Bomb, but Punk continued to kick out. Later, both men were left without a referee after a series of counters caused the official to fall out of the ring.
Owens connected with a Stunner, but there was nobody there to make the three-count. Punk answered with the GTS, only to find himself in the same situation.
Zayn then appeared and he attacked Punk at ringside and sent him back into the ring. After helping get the referee back into position, Zayn appeared to be working in Owens’ favor. The former WWE Universal Champion then hit another Stunner, but Punk survived the cover.
Zayn then grabbed the championship belt. He handed it to Kevin Owens, seemingly giving him an easy way to end the match. Owens took the belt but refused to use it on CM Punk. Instead, he handed it back to “The Underdog from the Underground.” That was the moment Zayn snapped.
He struck Owens with the title belt, leaving his former friend laid out in the ring. Punk took advantage of the opening and connected with another GTS before covering Owens for the victory.
Punk had retained the championship, but Sami Zayn made sure he would have the final word.
After the match, Zayn returned with the title and attacked Punk from behind. Owens was also caught in the assault as Zayn repeatedly used the championship belt on both men.
Zayn then stood over the two competitors as SmackDown went off the air, making it clear that his frustration over being left out of the championship picture had reached a breaking point.
The ending also changed the dynamic between Zayn and Owens. “The Prizefighter” had the opportunity to take a shortcut to the championship and chose not to do it. Zayn, meanwhile, showed that his own pursuit of the title has pushed him toward a very different path.
