Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has found a ton of new supporters, but also a ton of new haters. As a result, boos have become pretty common whenever she touches the ball or shows up on the WNBA screens. But her reaction to those boos has longtime reporter Sam Ponder impressed.
The boos rained down on Cunningham last night in the Fever’s game against the Toronto Tempo. Speaking to reporters after the game, Cunningham made it clear that she isn’t especially bothered. She acknowledged that taking the boos with the cheers is “what sports is all about.”
“I think that’s what sports is all about, you’re gonna get boos, you’re gonna get cheers,” Cunningham said.
Ponder loved it. Taking to X, she reposted Cunningham’s comments with the caption, “Love this.”
“Couldn’t have said it better”
Ponder is far from the only one giving Cunningham her props for how she handled those comments.
“This woman is amazing. I hope to have half the courage and positive outlook that she has,” one user wrote.
“My new Queen. Infectious personality. Love her,” wrote another.
“She could not have answered that better,” a third wrote.
“I like her more and more every time Sophie speaks.”

She’s rapidly becoming one of the WNBA’s most popular players, albeit with a very specific subset of the larger sports audience.
