Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Darnold was asked to reflect on the many teams that hired and fired him - the Jets, Panthers, 49ers and Vikings - and if he feels like proving them wrong in the Super Bowl. But Darnold dismissed that notion, declaring that he's only focused on improving and helping his team win.
“It doesn’t really come down to that for me,” Darnold said. “It’s always just been about putting in hard work, every single day. Hard work and all the dedication and hours I put in in the offseason, during the season, it leads to this moment. That’s the mindset I have, and really the mindset I’ve had my entire career.”
Darnold's Path to Glory
Selected third overall by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft, Darnold was viewed as a potential franchise savior, but his tenure in New York was hindered by inconsistent coaching, roster instability, and frequent turnovers.
Despite flashes of arm talent and athleticism, the Jets struggled during his three seasons, and Darnold was traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2021. His time in Carolina was similarly uneven, marked by injuries and offensive inconsistency, ultimately leading the team to move on after two seasons.

Darnold’s career took a stabilizing turn with the San Francisco 49ers, where he served as a backup and benefited from a strong coaching environment under Kyle Shanahan. He later signed with the Minnesota Vikings, positioning himself as a bridge or reclamation starter amid quarterback transitions.
While Darnold has not lived up to the lofty expectations of his draft status, he has carved out a durable NFL career, valued for his experience, arm strength, and ability to step in when needed.
