Ryan Flournoy entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick with plenty of questions surrounding whether he could make the leap from Southeast Missouri State to the NFL. After a quiet rookie season, he answered many of those doubts in 2025. He finished with 475 receiving yards and four touchdowns last season, emerging as one of the Dallas Cowboys' most reliable offensive weapons.
His production came at an important time for Dallas. As injuries and inconsistency affected the receiving corps throughout the season, Flournoy stepped into a larger role and proved he could consistently make plays. He established himself as the Cowboys No. 3 receiver behind CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens while showing the physicality and route-running ability that made him a late-round steal.
Now entering Year 3, the Cowboys believe there’s even more room for him to grow.
The biggest change isn’t physical
While Flournoy spent the offseason continuing to refine his game, he says the biggest difference heading into 2026 isn’t about speed or strength—it’s his mentality.
After proving he belongs in the NFL last season, Flournoy explained that he’s entering this year with a completely different mindset. Instead of constantly worrying about making the roster or earning playing time, he plans to “play freely” because he finally knows he belongs at this level.
That confidence can make a significant difference for a young receiver.
Players who trust themselves tend to play faster, attack defensive backs more aggressively, and make quicker decisions during critical moments. Rather than thinking through every rep, they’re able to simply react, allowing their athletic ability to take over.
For Flournoy, that’s exactly where his game appears to be heading.
Opportunity is knocking again
The Cowboys features plenty of star power with Lamb leading the receiving corps and Pickens providing another explosive option. That should continue creating favorable one-on-one opportunities for Flournoy throughout the season.
Last year, he showed he could capitalize on those matchups, becoming a dependable target for Dak Prescott on key downs. His ability to move the chains and create yards after the catch gave Dallas another dimension offensively.
If defenses continue dedicating extra attention to Lamb and Pickens, Flournoy could be in line for an even larger workload.
Several analysts have identified him as one of the Cowboys' most underrated players entering 2026, believing last season was only the beginning of what he can become. His improvement, combined with his newfound confidence, gives Dallas another player capable of making defenses pay for overlooking him.
The foundation has been set
The Cowboys don’t need Flournoy to become their No. 1 receiver.
They simply need him to continue developing into a dependable third option who can consistently exploit favorable matchups and keep defenses honest.
Flournoy has already shown he can contribute at a high level. Now, with a completely different mindset and the confidence that comes from proving he belongs, the Cowboys have every reason to believe his best football is still ahead.
