On Sunday, A.J. Brown finally made his Gillette Stadium debut as a member of the New England Patriots. His first game back proved that he has work to do to get up to speed with quarterback Drake Maye and New England’s offense.
In his first game back from his high-ankle injury, Brown had 10 targets but only caught three passes for 27 yards. While his connection with Maye wasn’t on point, Brown also didn’t help himself out with a career-high three drops.
After the game, Brown spoke to the media and took accountability for his performance.
“I didn’t play good. My timing was off. I’m much better than what I put on display today. There’s no excuses. I’ll be better,” said Brown.
Dream Come True
Brown is a well-documented Patriots fan, and when asked about his emotions during his home debut, he called the experience “a dream come true.”
Now that his Patriots home debut is out of the way, it’s time for Brown to get back to his dominant self.
Brown is one of the best receivers in the NFL thanks to his unique ability to physically overpower his matchup, paired with elite contested-catch ability, and he has the accolades to back it up.
Over the last four seasons with the Eagles, Brown was one of the best receivers in the NFL, with 1,000+ yards and 67+ receptions each season. He was also named to three Pro Bowls and was a second-team All-Pro selection three seasons.
Two Games In Four Days
Brown’s Patriots home debut did not go as expected, but the offense did not miss a beat in its 26-19 victory over the Jets. Drake Maye put the offense on his back for three touchdowns and no turnovers. Additionally, New England was able to establish the run game with 148 yards on 36 carries.
New England will have a quick turnaround as they head to Chicago to take on the Bears on Thursday night in primetime.
As the season rolls on, look for Drake Maye and A.J. Brown’s connection to grow into one of the league’s best quarterback-receiver duos.
