The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with some injuries. I know, I know, that's a shocking revelation.
In all seriousness, injuries are nothing new for the 49ers, and this summer has so far been no different. One practice last week saw over 20 players out with injury, and Monday's practice had plenty of guys out as well.
Christian McCaffreywas held out due to "tightness," but he was far from the only running back to miss. Kaelon Black, Jordan James, and Isaac Guerendo also missed. As a result, the 49ers brought in three veterans just in case more depth is added.
49ers try out Nyheim Hines and Zamir White, visit with Blake Watson
According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the 49ers brought in Zamir White, Nyheim Hines, and Blake Watson in on Monday in response to the injuries.
Hines is the most notable name of the bunch. Hines spent the first four-plus seasons of his career with the Indianapolis Colts and functioned as a pass-catching threat out of the backfield. Hines has also returned kicks and, most recently, spent time with the New Orleans Saints in 2025.
White was a fourth-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, and he spent four seasons with the team. White's best season came in 2023 when he rushed for 451 yards and one touchdown.
Watson, meanwhile, last played in a game in 2024 with the Denver Broncos. The running back has four carries for 10 yards in his career.
Do 49ers Need More Running Back Depth?
With all the injuries on Monday, Patrick Taylor Jr., Khalil Herbert, and Sincere McCormick were the only healthy running backs on the roster. That's concerning, and if McCaffrey has to miss any time, this team could be in trouble.
None of the trio brought in on Monday has been signed yet, but it will be interesting to see if the 49ers revisit that later. There are other solid free agent running backs available as well, like Miles Sanders, who might be of interest.
The team likes Black and James, but Black is a rookie, and James is unproven. There was some belief in Guerendo, but the running back was a non-factor in 2025 and has been injured for most of the summer.
It will also be interesting to see if any of the healthy depth backs can claim a spot. Herbert is interesting due to his experience with the Chicago Bears and ability to help as a returner.
