The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the 2026 NFL Draft with several needs to address, but few could have predicted that one of the draft's most talented pass rushers would still be available when they were getting ready to make their selection with the No. 15 overall pick.
That's exactly what happened when Rueben Bain Jr. fell into Tampa Bay's lap.
While draft projections are far from an exact science, many analysts viewed Bain as one of the most talented defensive players in this year's class. The Buccaneers were certainly fortunate that he slipped to the middle of the first round, but Jason Licht and his front office deserve credit for seizing the opportunity.
Bain possesses many of the traits NFL teams look for in a pass rusher. He combines power, explosiveness, and physicality with a skill set that should translate well to the professional level. Unlike some rookie pass rushers who require multiple seasons of development, Bain appears ready to contribute immediately.
Perhaps most importantly, he lands in an ideal situation.
Todd Bowles has built a reputation as one of the NFL's best defensive minds and has consistently found creative ways to maximize the talents of his pass rushers. Bain won't be asked to carry the defense as a rookie, which should allow him to develop naturally while still playing meaningful snaps from the start of the season.

Jason Licht deserves praise for continuing to trust his draft board. NFL teams often overthink draft selections, reaching for positional needs or passing on talented players because of minor concerns. Many NFL teams passed on Bain’s potential, instead focusing on traits like arm length rather than taking the heart of the player into account. When a player of Bain's caliber unexpectedly becomes available, successful organizations capitalize on the opportunity.
The Buccaneers have done exactly that throughout Licht's tenure.
There is never a guarantee that a rookie will become a star at the next level, but Bain possesses both the talent and the opportunity to make an immediate impact. Tampa Bay was fortunate that he was available at No. 15, and if he develops as many expect, the Buccaneers may look back on this selection as one of the most successful picks of the 2026 NFL.
