Why Is WWE Holding This Tournament?
The timing of the tournament is no coincidence. WWE is preparing for a September tour of Mexico, culminating with Raw in Mexico City on Sept. 14, where the tournament winner will challenge Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship.
AAA has also taken on a stronger WWE influence behind the scenes, with Mark Calaway, better known to wrestling fans as The Undertaker, serving as the promotion's head booker. The Undertaker was recently cited as a major behind-the-scenes influence on the acclaimed El Grande Americano match earlier this summer.
Speaking of Americano, it is notable that he is not included in the tournament. Nevertheless, with TripleMania and Worlds Collide both upcoming in September, he will be prominently featured alongside the tournament.
