The Jacksonville Jaguars’ 22-17 win in Cincinnati on Sunday was clinched when safety Rayuan Lane III stopped Bengals running back Chase Brown 1 yard short on fourth-and-10 with 50 seconds remaining. The tackle sealed the victory and supplied the clearest evidence yet for Jacksonville’s belief that reserve players can be ready for defining moments.
Locked On Jaguars host Tony Wiggins framed Lane’s finish as the product of an organizational standard rather than a one-play surprise. Wiggins said the coaching staff creates trust by preparing players who may not have a weekly role, then giving them real opportunities when injuries, matchups or game situations demand a change.
Lane entered the season listed behind safety Eric Murray on the depth chart, but he recorded eight tackles (six solo) in Cincinnati and delivered the decisive stop. The Jaguars drafted Lane in the sixth round in 2025, and his ability to close a one-score road game gives the defense another option as it heads into a demanding stretch.
Wiggins also pointed to cornerback Jarrian Jones, running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. and tight end Brenton Strange as examples of players who stayed engaged despite fluctuating opportunities. Rodriguez’s fourth-quarter touchdown against Cincinnati helped create the margin Lane protected, reinforcing the value of contributions beyond the top of the depth chart.
Jacksonville takes that depth-first identity to London on Sunday, Oct. 11, against the Philadelphia Eagles at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Eagles present a different test, but the Bengals game showed the Jaguars can win when the deciding play falls to a player outside the usual spotlight.
Jaguars News and Notes
– Linebacker Foyesade Oluokun: Wiggins argued that Oluokun’s consistency, availability and leadership have put him on a path toward a franchise-great conversation. The host’s larger point was that the veteran sets the same preparation standard for the defense that Jacksonville asks of its younger reserves.
– Wide receiver Parker Washington: Wiggins said Washington deserves an extension, but he distinguished a strong complementary receiver from the target-dominating players who command the league’s largest wide receiver contracts. Washington has 16 receptions for 228 yards and two touchdowns through four games, giving Jacksonville production while it weighs his long-term value.
