After missing the past four games with a shoulder injury, Colorado Rockies star catcher Hunter Goodman is heading to the 10-day IL.
The team made the decision to place Goodman on the IL on Tuesday, retroactive to August 15. The breakout star has been battling a left shoulder strain and appeared to be returning on Monday before the Rockies made him a late scratch. Colorado did not provide a timeline for Goodman’s return from the IL, but given that he nearly played on Monday, it could be the minimum stint.
Goodman has emerged as a bona fide star this year in his fourth MLB season. The catcher ranks third in home runs in the National League, behind only Matt Olson (35) and Kyle Schwarber (37). Through 111 games, Goodman is slashing .251/.320/.541, with 34 home runs, 69 RBI, and 104 total hits. The 26-year-old has been an NL All-Star in each of the past two seasons.
While the Rockies are still in last place in the National League West division, this year has been a noticeable improvement over 2025. The team already has seven more wins than all of last season and is just 1.5 games behind the San Francisco Giants for fourth place in the division.
Goodman’s bat will certainly be missed in the Rockies’ lineup, but a minimal stay would mean he can return on August 25 when Colorado is taking on the Washington Nationals. Perhaps what’s most impressive about Goodman’s season is that he has not relied on Coors Field for his power. The slugger has belted 19 of his 34 home runs on the road and has a significantly higher OPS away from Colorado at .964 vs. .801 at home.
In a corresponding move, the Rockies have recalled catcher Braxton Fulford from Triple-A Albuquerque.
