It's flown a bit under the radar amid this incredible FIFA World Cup, but Major League Soccer pulled off a major coup a few weeks ago, landing longtime European goal-scoring machine Robert Lewandowski. Unfortunately, his debut with the Chicago Fire is going to be delayed due to inclement conditions.
According to MLS insider Tom Bogert, today's game between the Fire and the Vancouver Whitecaps has been postponed due to "unsafe air quality." Recent wildfires in Canada have blown significant smoke into the city of Chicago, leading to unplayable conditions.
"BREAKING: Tonight’s marquee MLS match between the Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps has been postponed due to unsafe air quality, per sources. Canadian wildfire smoke has blown south to Chicago. Robert Lewandowski’s MLS debut is on hold," Bogert wrote on X.
Fans were understandably upset - if not downright furious - that their efforts
"The Fire are literally named to play in this weather come on!" one user remarked on X.
"This was supposed to be my first Fire game that I ever went to. The only reason I bought tickets was to watch Bob play his first MLS game. He literally made me a new die hard Chicago Fire fan and now this happens," another remarked.
"The Fire being extinguished by smoke," a third joked.
"Hard decision, but the right one."

Lewandowski to the Fire
Lewandowski has established himself as one of the greatest strikers of his generation through an extraordinary goal-scoring career spanning more than two decades. After beginning professionally in Poland, Lewandowski rose to prominence with Borussia Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles and reached the 2013 UEFA Champions League final. He elevated his game even further after joining Bayern Munich in 2014, becoming the club's all-time second-leading scorer while helping the German giants dominate domestic and European competition.

In 2022, he transferred to Barcelona, where he immediately won the Pichichi Trophy as La Liga's top scorer and helped the club capture the league title.
Internationally, Lewandowski has been the face of the Poland men's national football team for more than a decade, becoming his country's all-time leader in appearances and goals while captaining Poland in multiple UEFA European Championships and FIFA World Cups.
Individually, he has earned countless accolades, including The Best FIFA Men's Player award in 2020 and 2021, multiple European Golden Shoe honors, and more than a dozen league Golden Boot awards across Germany and Spain. Lewandowski has scored well over 700 career goals for club and country.
