As a 9th seed in the Big East, Xavier’s dreams of making March Madness may have come to an end. However, the Musketeers have a bigger crisis on their hands, as Head coach Richard Pitino is drawing interest from a rival.
Last week, Pitino was rumored to ‘highly consider’ leaving Xavier to become the new head coach of Providence as per Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68. But despite the escalating reports, the 43-year-old cleared the air and let everyone know his stance.
Pitino Has Good News for Xavier Fans
During his appearance at 55KRC radio show, Pitino mentioned the Providence rumors by saying ‘You never ever know with the world of Twitter what bombs are gonna hit you at any moment.’
The Xavier coach added that his phone was buzzing during Musketeer’s game against Providence. But Pitino then made a vow that will bring ease to most fans in Cincinnati. He said, "I promise you I will never leave after a 14 or 15 win season because that's not my intent at all."
After expressing his appreciation for Xavier fans, Pitino also delivered a reality check about an uncertain future. When the coach asked himself if he will ever leave Xavier, the Big East Coach replied ‘I have no idea’. The son of 2x NCAA Champion then reaffirmed his stance of making Xavier a championship-worthy program.
That is exactly why Richard Pitino left New Mexico to replace Sean Miller at the Big East program. Upon the coach's arrival last March, Xavier athletic director Greg Christopher outlined success in the NCAA Tournament and the Big East as key objectives for Pitino.
However, the Musketeers may seem to have struggled compared to last season where they managed to make March Madness after finishing 4th position. This season, Xavier are currently 9th seeded, hoping to even make it to the College Basketball Crown. With a decent 14-15 overall record during his first year with the team, Pitino is looking to continue his college basketball legacy with Xavier at least for now.
