Reynaldo López is very much in the news. Through three starts he boasts a 1.15 ERA and seems to be a pitcher very much in demand on fantasy baseball rosters. But his role in a brawl vs. Jorge Soler has these same owners wondering about his short-term availability.

His underlying metrics, though, say that his early performance is one of the biggest mirages of the early season. His velocity is down, and his stuff is well below average so far this season. With a suspension looming, López will have some time to work out the kinks. If he doesn’t, fantasy baseball owners will be in for a rude awakening.

First Let’s Talk About the Fight

The benches-clearing brawl in baseball is mostly a thing of yesteryear. Sure, sometimes words get exchanged and guys pop out of the dugout in anticipation, but the temperature usually cools. The fight in Anaheim seemed like a situation in which these two players thought an old score should be settled. Teammates in 2024, Soler and López could have an unknown history or grudge beyond a simple HBP earlier in this game. López made only one start last season, so this was Soler’s first time seeing him since that year.

What started as a stare-down quickly turned into a punches-thrown affair between the two but never involved other players. López invited him out to the mound, Soler complied and then López did something that could result in an extended suspension. He held onto the baseball and, using that hand to punch, landed a punch to the head-and-neck area. MLB is sorting out the situation. While starting pitcher suspensions hardly stretch beyond, effectively, one start, I’d guess López might face a 15-game-or-more punishment for his actions.

Missing a couple of starts might be a good thing for López, who despite his low ERA, has little to support those results. The career 3.89 ERA hurler has posted a 1.15 ERA in 15.2 IP. Hitters have just a .171 BABIP vs. López, but both of his earned runs have come off two solo shots. A third HR brought in unearned runs.

Aside from an above average slider, López has never had more than ordinary stuff. But this season, his stuff is worse than ever. Let’s look at his pitches and their Stuff+ grades compared to his career marks. A 100 grade means a pitch is average. A grade of 111 on a slider, for example, indicates a pitch is 11 percent better than the average slider. Grades below indicate the pitch is below league average stuff.

Only his curveball is near his career levels. In 2024, his fastball velocity was 95.7, but in each of his three starts he has yet to average even 95 mph. He is working his way back from a one-start season due to shoulder surgery, so a velocity build-up is to be expected. His stuff, though, is more concerning.

Long-Term Outlook for Reynaldo López in 2026 Fantasy

López is at a crossroads. After beginning his career as a starter, he shifted to the bullpen from 2021 to 2023, returning to rotation duties in 2024. That year he had a forearm and shoulder injury as well. So his health should always be a concern, and pitchers in their 30s do not enjoy the luxury of youth.

In my view, he has a lot of work to do before the walls close in. It’s possible he is not fully healed from shoulder surgery and needs more time to work out the kinks.

If López is suspended 10 games or more he should go back to Florida, get warm and work on his mechanics and stuff. But fantasy owners who were encouraged by his low ERA should at least hold onto him and hope for the best.

I think he winds up with a phantom injury and works out his stuff in a minor league rehab stint, or simply becomes a bullpen arm. The Braves rotation is swamped with injuries to Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep, so they will be hesitant to make a change, but a young arm like Didier Fuentes, currently in AAA after an impressive spring, could help fill a hole.
