WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has had her fair share of opponents during her tenure in the league.
However, in the wake of the decision to not hit Las Vegas Aces star forward A’ja Wilson with a suspension for going into the crowd to confront a fan in Indiana, there’s some further tension that is brewing.
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham called out the league, questioning a double-standard with Wilson.
“She’s like the LeBron James of our league, and so of course they’re not going to suspend her… Something should have happened,” Cunningham said on Saturday’s episode of her podcast, the No Hesitation Show with Drew Hanlen. “The two people who came off the bench onto the court, that should have happened. I think there’s definitely a double standard.”

Wilson, and her teammates who came off the bench, were not suspended for Game 3 of the first round playoff series. Las Vegas took down Indiana in Game 3 to advance in the WNBA Playoffs.
Sports reporter Christine Brennan is among those calling out the WNBA’s league office for its decisions.

“Some will be angry I reposted this. But there is a reason I did: I’m hearing some of the same things in my reporting since A’ja went after a fan. Bottom line: there is a palpable realization (finally) that Cathy Engelbert’s WNBA looks ridiculous pushing away/not wanting new fans,” she wrote.
Does the WNBA need changes heading into 2027?
