Sonny Gray left his future with the Boston Red Sox open on Wednesday after their postseason ended with a 9-2 loss to the New York Yankees.
New York completed a Wild Card Series sweep after beating Boston 9-0 in Game 1 on Tuesday. After the final game of the Red Sox’s season, Gray declined to commit to returning in 2027 as he approaches a contract decision.
“I don’t know,” Gray said when asked whether he considers Boston a potential destination next season.
Gray’s contract includes a $30 million option for 2027 with a $10 million buyout. If the option isn’t mutually exercised, he can enter free agency.
Gray, who will turn 37 before next season starts, also left open the possibility that Wednesday was his final major-league appearance.
“I don’t know what the future holds for me,” Gray said. “I do know that I walked off that mound with my chest back and my chin up, and I can definitely be proud that I left it all out there until the ball was taken out of my hands.”
Red Sox manager Chad Tracy removed Gray with two outs in the fifth inning and Boston trailing 1-0. Gray had thrown 70 pitches at the time of his removal, and he made it clear that he wanted to remain in the elimination game.
“I would’ve liked to live or die with me in that moment, but that’s the competitor I am,” Gray said. “Yeah, I think you can probably ask the guys, and they felt the same way.”

Gray went 18-5 with a 2.72 ERA in 29 regular-season starts. He finished Wednesday with two earned runs, six hits and five strikeouts across 4.2 innings.
Boston now enters the offseason with Gray’s future among its immediate questions as the veteran pitcher must determine whether his career continues in 2027 and, if it does, whether that season will come with the Red Sox.
