The Boston Red Sox are on a hot streak, winning their past five games, which includes a four-game sweep over the New York Yankees. Contributing to one of those wins was starting pitcher Payton Tolle, who took the mound on Friday.
He was impressive, throwing seven innings, allowing just one hit, zero earned runs, two walks and striking out seven. Despite the winning streak, though, the Red Sox are still 37-46 and 4.5 games back from an American League wild card spot.
More than halfway into the season, Boston is trending toward missing out on the postseason. However, Tolle has still given fans something to cheer about.

Despite making his debut last season, he maintained rookie eligibility going into 2026. At 23 years old, the left-hander is beginning to generate some buzz as the All-Star Game approaches on July 14.
It's not something he's focusing on, though. While speaking to MassLive's Christopher Smith, Tolle credited the talent around him and brushed aside the growing speculation about his candidacy.
"I think that we have some incredible guys on this team that deserve it," he said. "So it’s cool. And just being in that conversation is amazing, but that’s kind of far out of mind for me.”
Among starting pitchers with at least 70 innings, Tolle ranks 16th in ERA (2.78), fifth in expected ERA (2.90), 11th in WHIP (1.02) and is tied for eighth in opponent batting average (.202), according to FanGraphs.
While he's put up strong numbers, it will remain to be seen if he makes it to the All-Star Game. Unlike the starting position players, fan voting does not affect which pitchers are chosen. Instead, they are selected through a combination of player ballots and the Commissioner's Office, according to MLB.com.
