Boston Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela was absent from the lineup against the Baltimore Orioles after suffering right quadriceps tightness, prompting an update from interim manager Chad Tracy.
Rafaela was removed during the seventh inning of Boston’s loss to the Seattle Mariners after experiencing soreness in his right quad.
Tracy addressed the situation before the Red Sox opened their series against Baltimore, explaining that the team would continue evaluating Rafaela and was not yet prepared to establish a timeline for his return.
The latest update was reported by MassLive Red Sox beat writer Christopher Smith on X following Tracy’s pregame comments.
The day-to-day designation offers some encouragement for Boston, although Rafaela’s status will remain worth monitoring as the club moves through a critical stretch of the regular season.
The 25-year-old has been an important part of Boston’s lineup and defense this season. Through 135 games, Rafaela is batting .282 with 16 home runs, 32 doubles and 70 RBIs.
He has also provided value on the bases with 17 stolen bases while continuing to give the Red Sox significant range in center field.
Rafaela later indicated that the injury was largely precautionary, though he acknowledged he had been dealing with discomfort in his right leg before the issue tightened up against Seattle.
With Rafaela unavailable against Baltimore, Boston turned to Eli White in center field. The club also has Roman Anthony back in the mix after his own recent injury absence, giving Tracy additional options in the outfield.
Still, replacing Rafaela is not an easy task considering the role he has played throughout the season.
The Red Sox entered the series at 76-65 and remained in a strong position in the American League Wild Card race, making Rafaela’s health particularly important with the postseason approaching.
