The Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants made a one-for-one swap just 30 minutes before the 2026 Trade Deadline.
Both teams have been fairly active in the market on Monday, under different conditions. The Giants came in as sellers, notably sending Luis Arraez to the Philadelphia Phillies and Heliot Ramos to the New York Yankees.
While the Red Sox are buyers, most notably landing catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles.
The two teams came together to swap infielder Marcelo Mayer to the Giants for left-handed pitcher Erik Miller to the Red Sox.
Both of these players are under controllable contracts, with Mayer still in pre-arbitration and Miller not being a free agent until the 2030 season.
Mayer has had an injury-riddled sophomore campaign following a promising rookie year.
The 23-year-old is slashing .220/.282/.312, a .592 OPS, with three home runs, 22 RBI and 10 doubles in 70 games. He has struggled in all areas this season but was an above-average defender at second base with great Hard-Hit numbers in his rookie year.
On the other side, the Red Sox are receiving reliever Erik Miller to solidify their bullpen.
In 38 appearances, the 28-year-old is posting a 2.76 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 22 walks in 32 2/3 innings. Miller leans on his sinker and slider combination to devastate hitters, generating a lot of swing-and-miss.
Both pieces should have large impacts on their new teams for years to come.
