The long road to recovery continues for Boston Red Soxfirst baseman Triston Casas.
Casas, who hasn't been on the field since May of 2025, has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left wrist, the Red Sox announced on Thursday. This marks the second procedure for the 26-year-old during this lengthy absence, the first being reconstructive knee surgery to repair a torn left patellar tendon.
After suffering the initial knee injury in a game on May 2, Casas was ruled out for the year and eyed a return for early 2026. He progressed well through spring training and was on track to rehab in the minor leagues for the first month or two of the season, eventually joining the big-league club as a power-hitting left-handed DH option.
This plan was derailed in April, when Casas suffered an intercostal strain on his left side and shut down from swinging. The rib issue, which mirrored but was not related to a 2024 injury when he missed over half the season with torn cartilage is his rib cage, eventually subsided and it looked like he was back on track for an eventual return this year. But as he got back into baseball activities, the wrist setback popped up and shut him down once again.
A former top prospect that ranked first in the Red Sox system back in 2021, Casas emerged as an offensive force in his rookie year in 2023, belting 24 homers while batting .263 with an .857 OPS in 132 games. Since then, he has appeared in just 92 games for the Red Sox, slowly becoming a forgotten piece of the equation for the organization.
Boston has seen extreme production from the first base position in the form of All-Star Willson Contreras, who ranks second in the American League in OPS (.935) and has become the vocal leader of the club. The 34-year-old veteran has ignited the Red Sox's improbable turnaround and remains under contract for two more seasons.
