The Boston Red Sox have had an underwhelming start to the 2026 MLB season, entering Monday’s game against the Detroit Tigers sitting five games under .500 with an 8-13 record.

Still, it is early, and the organization believes it has the talent to rebound after an active offseason that brought in multiple former All-Stars, particularly on the pitching side.

One of those additions was right-hander Sonny Gray, acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals. The 36‑year‑old veteran has earned three All‑Star selections and was coming off another strong season in 2025. Gray has spent 14 seasons in MLB and has long been known as one of the most durable arms in the league.

Unfortunately for Boston, Gray’s start on Monday at Fenway Park ended abruptly. He was unable to get out of the third inning, tossing just 2 2/3 innings and 40 total pitches.

He was efficient early, throwing 27 strikes and recording two strikeouts while allowing only one run, appearing to keep Detroit’s offense in check.

But after walking Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres in the top of the third, Gray immediately appeared uncomfortable. After a brief discussion with trainers, he exited the game, a concerning sight for the Red Sox. Danny Coulombe entered in relief.

Moments later, the team announced an update on his status. “Red Sox say Sonny Gray has ‘right hamstring tightness,’” reported Chris Cotillo of MassLive.

While the injury is not arm-related, it is still troubling for Boston, which expected Gray to be a reliable stabilizer in the rotation. It remains unclear whether he will require a stint on the injured list, but further testing is likely.

Gray’s start to his Red Sox tenure has been uncharacteristic, as he has not pitched deep into games. Through his first four outings, he had thrown only 20 1/3 innings with a 4.43 ERA.

Gray is clearly capable of much more, and this setback is a significant blow for a team trying to find its footing. The Red Sox will hope the injury proves minor, because they need Gray healthy if they want to climb back into contention.
