Starting pitching depth was already a priority for the Tampa Bay Rays heading into the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
However, that need may be even greater now after Shane McClanahan exited Thursday's 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers in the fourth inning due to left mid-back tightness.
While the left-hander does not believe the injury is serious, it is something the Rays will need to monitor closely.
McClanahan, 29, has been solid in his first season since 2023 after missing all of 2024 following Tommy John Surgery and all of 2025 because of left triceps nerve irritation suffered during spring training last year.
Across 20 starts in 2026, McClanahan is 9-6 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over 99 innings. He has recorded 91 strikeouts against 35 walks while holding opposing hitters to a .207 batting average.
McClanahan's success, along with the rest of Tampa Bay's starters, has led to an impressive 3.49 rotation ERA. That mark ranks fourth in MLB.
But if McClanahan is forced to miss time, the Rays will need reinforcements for their rotation. Given McClanahan's injury history and Griffin Jax already at a career-high 86.2 innings, adding rotation depth may become necessary. Come the postseason, the more starting pitching, the better.
The Rays have arguably their best opportunity in recent years to win the American League and potentially capture the franchise's first World Series title. That reality could spark the organization to act with greater urgency at the deadline, especially when it comes to acquiring starting pitching.
Tampa Bay has already been linked to several of the top starters on the market, including Tarik Skubal and Freddy Peralta. Acquiring either pitcher would require a significant return.
The Rays have a deep farm system, headlined by MLB Pipeline's No. 9 prospect, outfielder Theo Gillen. However, according to former general manager Jim Bowden, Tampa Bay will not include Gillen in any potential Skubal deal. Yet he added that the Rays still have enough prospect depth to acquire Skubal.
The Rays have historically moved impending free agents as opposed to trading for them. But if McClanahan's injury causes him to miss time, the case for adding another starter only grows stronger. A rotation consisting of Nick Martinez, Drew Rasmussen, and Ian Seymour is already exciting.

Trading for a proven frontline starter would only enhance one of the Rays' biggest strengths this season while providing additional depth ahead of the postseason.
Heading into a marquee series against the American League Central-leading Chicago White Sox, Tampa Bay (64-44) owns the best record in the American League and sits 3.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees atop the American League East.
