The Tampa Bay Rays revealed an update on starting pitcher Shane McClanahan following his early exit.
McClanahan has pitched well thus far in his first season since 2023. The 29-year-old missed the previous two seasons following Tommy John Surgery.
On the year, the two-time All-Star is posting a 3.09 ERA with 91 strikeouts and a 1.12 WHIP in 99 innings.
The injury bug seemed to have caught up to McClanahan again on Thursday as he was removed from his start against the Texas Rangers in the fourth inning.
The Rays later revealed he was removed from the game with left-mid back tightness.
The left-hander surrendered one run in three innings again Texas.
His fastball velocity was noticeably down throughout the start. On the season, his average fastball clocks in at 95.6 mph, he was down to 92.9 mph on Thursday.
The Rays will monitor McClanahan in case further action is required.
Luckily for the Rays, their pitching staff has been excellent on the year, posting a 3.71 team ERA, the seventh best in baseball.
If McClanahan needs to be shut down for a little while, they have the pieces available to step up.
