The Los Angeles Rams made one of the most surprising first-round picks of the 2026 NFL Draft. Just months after an NFC Championship Game appearance and Matthew Stafford being named the MVP, Los Angeles selected quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 pick.
Instead of building off their success in the 2025 season, the Rams opted to plan for the future with Stafford at 38 years old and entering his 18th NFL season. Simpson has already gotten the opportunity to showcase his talent in front of his new team through rookie minicamp, voluntary OTAs and mandatory minicamp.
Of course, he is also in a unique situation, sitting behind a quarterback who is coming off an MVP season.

However, he views this as an opportunity to grow as a player. When speaking to ESPN's Sarah Barshop, Simpson explained how much he's been able to lean on Stafford and fellow backup Stetson Bennett IV while adjusting to the NFL.
“I mean, he's the MVP for a reason," Simpson said. "Everything he does, he's so just aware of everything. Aware of how everything works [and is] so detailed. Being in the room with him is just such a blessing. I really appreciate him and Stetson taking me in and answering all the questions I have. I know I'm probably annoying them, but it's been really helpful. I can't thank them enough."
After being selected by the Rams, the signal caller faces high expectations that he may not have the opportunity to live up to for several years. This offseason, Stafford signed a one-year, $55 million extension and is under contract through the 2027 season.
As Simpson develops behind one of the NFL's most experienced quarterbacks, his relationship with Stafford could play a big role in his growth. While he's not expected to play much as a rookie, he will look to soak up as much knowledge as possible.
