Any discussion of the most quotable sports figures must start with one Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra.
The New York Yankees great was one of the finest catchers in MLB history, a 10-time World Series champion, three-time MVP and Hall of Famer. However, he's perhaps known as much for his quotability as his baseball ability.
Indeed, although Berra played (1946-63, 1965) and managed (1964, 1972-75, 1984-85) long before the internet era, his long list of malaprops has permeated the online world nevertheless. With that said, we logically debut this series with a Yogi gem from his time as manager of the New York Mets.
In August 1973, Berra's Mets were in the National League East cellar. But they rallied to win the division on their way to the NL pennant. At some point during the pennant race, he made the following offhand comment to reporters:
"It ain't over till it's over."
Of all Berra's quotes, this might be the most famous. To this day, it seems to apply regularly to the sports world — whether it's a buzzer beater to topple a top seed in Tampa or a last-second shot to upset another No. 1 seed in Washington. Berra died in 2015, but we still can celebrate him as a sports savant. (Indeed, he will be featured somewhat regularly in this series. Because of course.)
