Back on Dec. 20, a massive brawl broke out during a youth basketball game in Staten Island, New York. It wasn't until this week though that footage of this chaotic incident surfaced online.
This brawl occurred during a 6th grade boys game between St. Teresa and Saint Clare, according to SILive. The footage showed two moms arguing near the corner of the gymnasium. While it's unclear what was said, they started throwing hands within seconds of their initial argument.
It didn't take long for spectators and staff members to step in and try to break up this fight. Unfortunately, a second altercation unfolded during this brawl.
As you'd imagine, the Catholic Youth Organization condemned this brawl. The two women at the center of this situation, meanwhile, have been suspended indefinitely from attending CYO games.
"The CYO is no longer gonna tolerate fights that just ruin it and crush it for kids," Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella said, via NBC New York. "There were kids on the court crying because they didn’t know what was happening, the game had to come to an end and these kids suffer."
What's next for CYO?
In an effort to make sure a brawl like this doesn't happen again, the CYO is implementing a new policy.
If a spectator for a CYO game gets ejected by a referee for any reason, they'll be banned for the rest of the year. A physical altercation, on the other hand, would result in a lifetime ban.
"The mission was about teaching them responsibility," Fossella said. "The mission was about them having a good time: the kids. The kids are the center of this universe here. And every once in a while some spectators get out of control and ruin it for the kids and ruin it for everybody else."
Hopefully, parents will think twice before causing a scene at a youth sporting event.
