Bill Belichick built one of the most decorated resumes in NFL history, and Canton is still figuring out what to do with it. The longtime Patriots coach turned that franchise into a nearly two-decade dynasty, and the numbers behind that run remain unmatched by almost anyone who has ever stood on an NFL sideline.

Across 49 years as a head coach, Belichick finished with 333 career wins, including the playoffs, second all-time behind only Don Shula’s 347. He went 31-13 in the postseason, reached nine Super Bowls and won six of them, both NFL records.

Add in three AP Coach of the Year awards, 17 AFC East titles and 13 AFC Championship Game appearances, and it’s not a resume most Hall of Fame committees would need to think twice about.

And yet none of that was enough to get him elected on the first ballot. Belichick needed 80% of the 50-member Selection Committee, or 40 votes, to make the Class of 2026, and he fell short. Reports at the time pointed to off-field organizational controversy as a major factor working against him with voters.

Now, the Hall of Fame appears to be responding.

On Friday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced a series of bylaw changes to how it selects future classes, starting with a major cut to the Selection Committee itself, dropping it from 50 members down to 28, per Fox 59. Candidates going forward will be split into three groups: players, coaches and contributors.

The old system had grouped players into modern-era and seniors categories, with the seniors track reserved for anyone 25 years removed from the game. According to Porter, that setup could create “unintended biases” in certain cases, from selectors representing a candidate’s home market to concerns that voters could be swayed as modern-era candidates neared seniors eligibility.

The new process looks different. At the in-person meeting each February, one presenter will make the case for each candidate before the floor opens for discussion, and selectors will no longer be tied to specific NFL markets.

Subcommittees will separately choose one coach and one contributor for consideration each year, and the contributors category itself has been broadened to weigh a candidate’s playing and coaching background alongside their other contributions to the game.

Those coach and contributor finalists will then join the player candidates at the annual meeting, where the full committee will debate and vote under the new format for the first time.

Whether that new format changes anything for Belichick won’t be known until the Class of 2027 discussion gets underway.
