With “Thursday Night Football” less than 48 hours away, Prime Video has reached a decision on Kirk Herbstreit’s future with the network.
Herbstreit is primarily known for his analysis on ESPN’s “College GameDay,” but he’s been Prime Video’s color commentator for “Thursday Night Football” since the 2022 season. His dynamic with Al Michaels hasn’t been exactly elite, but they’ve been a respectable duo for the past few years.
According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, Prime Video has signed Herbstreit to a lucrative contract extension. The plan is for him and Michaels to call games together for the 2027 season.
“After Amazon initially inked Michaels to a three-year deal, the legendary play-by-play caller has agreed to year-to-year contracts,” Marchand wrote. “Michaels, 81, has repeatedly said he will know when it is time to retire. Herbstreit’s new contract, which includes the aforementioned outs for Amazon, is for multiple seasons and for more than eight figures per year, the sources said.”
As part of Herbstreit’s deal, Prime Video has the flexibility to pursue Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay. He’s considered the top target to eventually replace Herbstreit.

Will Sean McVay leave the Rams?
McVay was linked to Amazon Prime Video back in 2025. There were rumors about him reeiving a five-year, $100 million deal from the network.
Even though McVay is still committed to the Rams, he has teased an eventual exit from coaching.
“I know I love football and I’m so invested in this thing and I’m in the moment right now,” McVay said. “But at some point, too, if you said what do you want to be able to do? I want to be able to have a family and I want to be able to spend time with them.”
If McVay eventually moves on from coaching, he’d be a great fit for Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” coverage.
