What would have happened if Donald Trump had bought an NFL franchise like he wanted to? Trump was interested in buying the Buffalo Bills. However, the billionaire businessman was unsuccessful in his attempts to become part of the NFL’s ownership group.
Trump, 80, of course went on to pursue a career in politics. Trump served as President of the United States from 2017-20 and he took office for the second time in January of 2025.
But what would have happened if President Trump had bought an NFL team? He warned Clay Travis on Saturday, that he’s still waiting for prices to come down. It sounds like he’s still interested, though.
“You ever think what would have happened if you bought an NFL team. Do you think you would have ever run for president,” he said.
Trump warned: “Well, I’ve been waiting for 45 years for the prices to come down. Do you understand?”
Trump has been feuding with the NFL since the 1980s
As ABC News points out, Trump has long been feuding with the NFL.
“Trump’s long-standing beef with the NFL dates back to the 1980s, when he was the majority owner of the New Jersey Generals in the United States Football League,” ABC News shared.
“Trump acquired the New Jersey Generals after their 1983 inaugural season, and he soon went head to head with the NFL, poaching multiple top-ranked players from the dominant league. In 1985, less than two years after he became a team owner, he and a handful of other owners voted to switch from a spring to fall schedule.
“The move was in an attempt to eventually force a merger with the NFL, according to The Associated Press.”
President Trump attempted to buy the Buffalo Bills back in 2014, though his attempts were unsuccessful.
“I did it a little tentatively,” Trump previously said of the offer, rumored to have been below $1 billion. “When I put the bid in for the Buffalo Bills, I always was a little concerned if the NFL would remember how I knocked the hell out of them.”
President Trump appears to be more of a college football fan these days, as evidenced by his appearance at Texas at Tennessee on Saturday.
