President Donald Trump received a Stanley Cup prediction from T. J. Oshie during a White House visit on May 5, adding a hockey moment to a policy-focused event.

Oshie attended an Oval Office ceremony tied to a Presidential Fitness Test proclamation, nearly a year after retiring from the NHL.

During the interaction, Trump asked a direct question: “Who’s going to win in hockey?” Oshie answered with a mix of realism and instinct. “Colorado’s the favorite. I like Minnesota, though,” he said, pointing to the Minnesota Wild as his pick despite the Colorado Avalanche holding stronger odds.

The timing of the prediction adds context. Colorado entered the second round as the Presidents’ Trophy winner and opened with a 9–6 win against the Wild in Game 1. Stars like Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon have driven a high-powered offense, while goaltender Scott Wedgewood (5-0-0) remains unbeaten in the postseason.

Minnesota, however, has built momentum through balance. The team eliminated the Dallas Stars in six games and leans on production from Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, and Quinn Hughes. Their Game 1 loss exposed defensive gaps, but their scoring depth keeps them competitive.

Oshie’s pick reflects how players often value structure and resilience over raw dominance. Colorado’s speed and transition game make them the clear favorite, but Minnesota’s ability to generate offense from multiple lines gives them upset potential in a long series.

Oshie’s presence at the White House shows his role as a respected voice after retirement. He ended a 16-year career in June 2025 due to chronic back issues, leaving behind a reputation built on clutch play and leadership.

In the NHL playoffs, depth and timing often matter more than star power, as we saw in the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks series, in which the Oilers got eliminated early.

So, Minnesota fits that profile, even against a team as complete as Colorado.
