Optimism surrounding the Dallas Cowboys is growing entering the 2026 season. After missing the playoffs in consecutive years, Dallas returns one of the NFL’s most talented offenses and features a rebuilt defense that should be significantly better under defensive coordinator Christian Parker.

Here are five predictions for the Cowboys ahead of their season opener.

Team MVP: Dak Prescott

The Cowboys will go as far as Dak Prescott takes them.

Prescott passed for more than 4,500 yards and 30 touchdowns last season, and he again has an elite receiving tandem in CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. If Dallas returns to the postseason, Prescott will likely be the biggest reason.

With Lamb’s route-running ability and Pickens’ talent as a downfield target, Prescott has everything he needs to produce another MVP-caliber season. Many analysts even selected him as their choice to win the league’s award entering 2026.

Most Improved Player: Tyler Guyton

Tyler Guyton enters his third season with an opportunity to establish himself as the Cowboys’ long-term answer at left tackle.

After being told he would have to compete for the position, Guyton separated himself from Nathan Thomas and secured the starting job during training camp. He is healthier, playing with improved technique and reportedly performed well against a talented Los Angeles Rams defensive front during joint practices.

Guyton’s development will be critical because Prescott’s production depends heavily on Dallas keeping its offensive line together. If his offseason progress carries into meaningful games, Guyton could place himself in the Pro Bowl conversation.

Breakout Player: Shavon Revel Jr.

Shavon Revel Jr. endured an uneven rookie season while working his way back from a serious knee injury. Now healthier, the young cornerback appears prepared to take a considerable step forward.

Revel’s combination of length and athleticism makes him a natural fit in Parker’s defense. He also gained valuable experience competing against Lamb and Pickens throughout the offseason.

Even if Revel does not begin the season as the starter, DaRon Bland’s recent availability issues could create opportunities. Revel has the physical talent to turn those snaps into a permanent role.

Rookie to Watch: Caleb Downs

Caleb Downs was drafted to become an immediate difference-maker in Dallas’ secondary, and expectations should remain high.

His instincts, versatility and ability to line up in different areas give Parker another weapon to deploy. Down is also considered one of the leading Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates.

Linebacker Jaishawn Barham is another rookie worth monitoring. His strength and ability to defeat blockers should earn him a productive rotational role early in the season.

Final Record Prediction: 11-6

Dallas has enough offensive firepower to compete with almost anyone, but its schedule will present several difficult tests. The difference between another disappointing season and a playoff return will be whether the revamped defense can hold up against quality opponents.

The Cowboys will win the NFC East this season and will host a playoff game in Jerry World come January.

Prescott remains the headliner, but improved play from Guyton, Revel and the Cowboys’ young defenders along with a newly improved defense will be the deciding factors whether Dallas can make noise come January and make a run to the Super Bowl.
