Ir was sadly confirmed this week that a married couple died in an accident while on vacation.
According to reports, Elaine and Malcolm Richmond were spending their Christmas vacation in the Maldives. Their funeral home, Stubbins and Hope, said the married couple was involved in a scuba accident. There weren't any details shared with the public, but apparently there are "no criminal or suspicious circumstances" surrounding this accident.
"They were members of Maldives Holidaymakers, and they were known to a lot of members, but they regularly visited Ellaidhoo. Elaine and Malcolm visited Ellaidhoo over 60 times, three times in 2025, and in addition had been going to the island for the last 17 years at Christmas," a tribute from Maldives Holidaymakers said.
What's odd is that Elaine reportedly died on December 19. Her husband didn't pass away until December 22.

As you'd imagine, the public is confused and heartbroken over this situation.
"Very sad and strange story. What gets to me is that a diving incident should be reported to the Scuba governing organization and investigated. After all, divers are keeping the organization in business every year with registration," one person said.
"Rest in peace, their souls belong to the sea now," a Facebook user wrote.
"My heart goes out to their families. But Where was the dive master? How deep were they diving? Safety stops? Decompression sickness? Were they using nitrox? Diving can be a dangerous sport and there is always a risk, but knowing the details can help prevent future avoidable tragedies," another person wrote. "I loved diving in the Maldives and never found it overly risky, but you just never really know."
