Prayers are pouring in after five people have been killed near the Winter Olympics in Italy over the past week.
Five people have been killed in avalanches near the Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy. The two separate avalanches are part of a troubling trend, as there have been several mountain disasters in Italy over the past two weeks.
"At least three skiers were caught up in Sunday morning’s avalanche in the Couloir Vesses, a well-known freeride route in Courmayeur, in the upper Val Veny, according to Italy's Alpine Rescue," the AP reported.
"One of the victims was taken to a hospital in serious condition but later died, the agency said. Fifteen rescuers, three canine units and two helicopters took part in the search and rescue efforts."
Previously, three were killed in avalanches in the mountainous regions of Trentino Alto Adige and Lombardy.
"The skiers were all skiing off-piste, which means skiing on unpatroled terrain outside the designated runs of ski resort, per the outlet," PEOPLE reported.
"One of the bodies recovered was a man skiing at Punta Rocca, a 3,300-meter peak on the highest mountain in the Dolomites, according to Italy’s Alpine Rescue Service, per Reuters. Alpine Rescue added that the man — who was with three other skiers at the time — was buried under snow after causing the avalanche. His three companions were unharmed, per Reuters."

"Can't believe this. Will be thinking of their families," one added.
