In a clash between two of the best nations in the World Cup, Spain was able to score late to knock off Portugal by a score of 1-0.
Mikel Merino snuck past Portugal's back line and was gifted a beautiful pass from Ferran Torres. Without a single dribble, Merino fired it past Diogo Costa for what was the game-winning goal in the 90th minute.
While the Spanish squad lives to see another day in the tournament, Portugal's run comes to an end. It also marks the end of the international career for Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who announced that the tournament would be his last for the national team.
After the game, in what will be looked back on as a passing of the torch, Ronaldo was consoled by Spanish wunderkind Lamine Yamal.
Fans from across the world took to social media to talk about how touching of a moment it was between the two superstars.
"My heart is broken he is a legend, this is his last World Cup," wrote one fan.
"When the GOAT meets the future the world watches, guess we just got a sneak peek of the next legend’s autograph line," said a second.

This year's tournament marked the sixth World Cup for Ronaldo, who debuted in 2006 at 21-years-old. In total, he has made 27 appearances, scored 11 goals and also notched two assists.
With the victory, Spain advances to the Quarterfinal round, and will play the winner of Team USA and Belgium.
