The first September Saturday of college football brings a full slate of college football games, though most will not be all that competitive. Sure we saw a massive upset Thursday night when 29.5-point underdog UMass ended its 16-game losing streak by beating Rutgers… but that was Rutgers. Ohio State is a 50.5-point favorite over Ball State today. Don’t expect any surprises there.
There are very few Week 1 games with a point spread under 10. Even the marquee matchup of the day — Clemson at LSU (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC) — has the home team favored by 10. A few years ago, this battle of Tigers would have had a much smaller spread. Both of these teams finished a disappointing 7-6 last season. Lane Kiffin makes his LSU head coaching debut in this one, while Dabo Swinney begins his 18th season leading Clemson. Both teams are looking to make a statement.
