Who’s going to win the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback battle isn’t exactly the sexiest subject matter of the NFL preseason, but hey, there aren’t many other QB1 jobs up for grabs at this point. Sure, Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell says his QB spot is an open competition, but don’t believe the hype. Kyler Murray, not J.J. McCarthy, will be leading the Vikings offense.
As for Cleveland, who knows? Going into training camp, it was painted as a neck-and-neck battle between veteran Deshaun Watson and 2025 fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders. But what about Dillon Gabriel, who was actually drafted two rounds higher than Sanders last year? Athlon Sports’ Doug Farrar made the case this week that Gabriel should get the job. As he pointed out, Gabriel was the only Browns quarterback who threw more TD passes than interceptions (7-2) last season. Sanders had seven TD passes and 10 picks. Watson, recovering from two Achilles tears, hasn’t played in an NFL game since Oct. 20, 2024.
