The San Francisco 49ers are down in Southern California Thursday night to play the Los Angeles Chargers (10 p.m. ET, NFL Network) in a preseason contest. It’s a short trip — much shorter than the one they’ll be taking in a few weeks, when they kickoff their regular season with a Sept. 10 game against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
That’s about as far as you’ll see NFL teams travel for a regular-season game, but it’s actually the first of a record-breaking nine international games for the league this year. In addition to Australia, there will be three games in London and one each in Brazil, France, Spain, Germany and Mexico.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently told German media that it’s not out of the question there will someday be an NFL franchise based overseas.
