Andrew Perloff made an excellent comparison in his column today. Kyle Shanahan has had a very good run as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, winning three NFC West titles and taking his team to the Super Bowl twice in his nine seasons on the job. Similar to Andy Reid when he was head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles — perennially a Super Bowl contender but unable to win the big one.
Just as Reid did in Kansas City, Perloff suggests that Shanahan needs a change of scenery before he wins a Super Bowl.
The 49ers have had 10 or more wins in four of the last five seasons. Unless they completely fall apart this season, it’s hard to imagine the team would let Shanahan go. But anything is possible. We all know which struggling coaches are on the hot seat entering the 2026 season, but even successful coaches feel the heat every season.
