The Boston Red Sox begin a three-game series at home against the Toronto Blue Jays Friday night, looking to start a new winning streak. The Red Sox lost the nightcap of a Wednesday doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles — ending the team’s remarkable 15-game winning streak, which had tied a team record last accomplished in 1946.
When the streak began, Boston was considered an also-ran in the AL playoff race. Now they hold a small lead for the third wild-card spot. After losing their first game in two weeks, veterans Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras held a players-only meeting. They wanted their teammates not to get down about the streak ending.
“I think we can beat anybody,” Contreras said. “That's lesson No. 1. We are a good team that battles. We are resilient and a team that stays together, winning or losing. That was a great ride.”
